Stage 1: Pre-Drive
Lessons 1-6
This is where your teenager will become familiar with the vehicle.
YOU ARE THE DIFFERENCE
Stage 2: Learning The Basics
Lessons 7-12
Motor vehicle crashes are still the no. 1 cause of injury and death among teenagers, taking an average of 3,000 young lives per year in the United States. That’s a scary statistic, but the good news is that YOU can make a difference.
The single most effective element in reducing teen driver crashes is supervised driving with an engaged teacher as part of the driver’s license process and beyond.
Most states require supervised driving as part of the Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) process. Because of this requirement, those states report a 20-40% decline in crashes.
The three main causes of teenage crashes are inexperience, nighttime driving, and driving with multiple passengers. Teaching Driving helps you address these situations, and many others, so that you can make the biggest difference in your teen’s driving and potentially save their life.
START FROM THE BEGINNING
This program provides everything you need to satisfy supervised driving requirements for a Graduated Driver's License, and for parents to become great driving mentors to their teen.
Regardless of whether or not your teenager has driven with a professional driving instructor, you will still want to make sure you start from the beginning and cover all of the lessons. The reason for this is that you don’t know which exercises and behaviors your teenager has covered with his or her professional instructor, and how skilled he or she is at them. Your teenager might insist that something has already been covered so there is no need to do it again. If this happens, say that this is an excellent opportunity for them to show you their mastery.
I have laid out the lessons in such a way that a lot of the skills build on each other. They are grouped into four stages:
Stage 1: Pre-Drive
Lessons 1-6
This is where your teenager will become familiar with the vehicle.
Stage 2: Learning The Basics
Lessons 7-12
Your teenager will learn how to steer, accelerate, and brake, as well as learning a little bit of parking. Having good control of the vehicle is necessary before you and your teen venture off into traffic.
Stage 3: On The Road
Lessons 13-24
You’ll spend most of your time in this stage helping your teen learn the skills and behaviors necessary to stay crash-free.
Stage 4: Driving on the Highway
Lessons 25
In this stage, you and your teen will learn the ins and outs of how to drive safely on the highway.
All of the lessons build upon each other. Ultimately, you are the instructor, and you can choose the order in which to tackle them. However, I strongly recommend working through the stages in order.
About Drew
Drew Scheneman – Professional Driving Instructor
Hi, I'm Drew. I am a teacher, traveler, and adventurer. For several years I owned a successful business teaching people of all ages and nationalities how to drive. Most states require several hours of supervised drive time, before teenagers can get their full license, and often parents don't have the resources to pay a professional driving instructor (like me) to spend that time driving with their teen, so parents continually asked me if they could purchase a book or video that would help them teach their teenager how to drive at home.
I realized there weren't many resources that parents could use to help them teach their teen safe driving habits and skills at home, so I decided to create one. Teaching Driving: A Parent's Guide to Teaching Your Teen to Drive is my effort to give parents the tools they need to fulfill their supervised driving time requirements, and to teach their teen to be great drivers and ultimately save lives.
Teaching safe driving habits to young drivers is a cause I genuinely believe in, and I want to make it easier (and cheaper) for parents and guardians.
